Our History
1965
Vernon Young starts Burford Tobacco Ltd. (BTL). Branching off from the family’s John Deere farm equipment dealerships. BTL begins to manufacture harvesting equipment for the tobacco farming industry
1972
After working at BTL for a number of years William Fowler starts his own fabricating business inside the BTL facility on King Street in Burford. Fowler Metal Industries Ltd. continues the fabrication and repairing of the tobacco harvesting equipment, trailer hitch systems and chassis frames for the recreational trailer industry
1975
Fowler Metal Industries expands the King Street facility and starts contract with Gas Lite Industries manufacturing components for the emerging gas BBQ industry
1979
Fowler Metal Industries starts contract fabricating complete garbage truck compacting units for Heil Truck and Trailer
1981
Built new facility on Colborne Street near Brantford Airport for production of the Heil compacting systems
1981
Fowler starts producing all fabricated parts and assemblies for Zamboni ice resurfacing machines for contract manufacturing company SMI in Toronto
1984
Zamboni opens their own assembly facility in nearby Brantford Ontario and Fowler continues supply to the Zamboni Company directly.
1994
Shawn Fowler joins his father William in the business and later that year Fowler Metal purchases its first CNC turret punch machine
1996
Fowler constructs new facility on land at 1 Albert Judge Drive in Burford
1997
Purchase of first fiber optic laser cutting machine in the area and also an advanced 9 axis CNC press brake. These are the first of many advanced technology machine tools to come
2001
Addition added to 1 Albert Judge Drive for added capacity
2003
Shawn Fowler assumes role as President of Fowler Metal. Another addition added to 1 Albert Judge Drive
2007
FMI Addtek Inc. is incorporated to begin producing hydraulic and fuel tanks. Mark Newman joins as VP and GM of FMI Addtek as minority share holder
2010
Growth of FMI Addtek triggers purchase of industrial property at 10 Spalding Drive in Brantford. FMI Addtek moves into Spalding facility
2015
The FMI group sees continuous growth of 25 – 30 % growth YoY throughout 2012 – 2018 adding multiple automated fiber optic laser systems. FMI Addtek Expands to occupy entire Spalding facility
2018
Fowler Metal Industries purchases shares of FMI Addtek. Advanced multisite ERP system implementation begins. Robotic laser welding cell added to Spalding
2019
Fowler Metal Industries purchases Canweld Metal Products Inc. adding facility at 9 Albert Judge Drive in Burford which produces large weldments, shot blasting and painting systems. Large format robotic mig cell added to Spalding
